Transport aircraft chartered under NATO’s Strategic Airlift International Solution (SALIS) programme are ferrying nearly 25 million protective masks from China to Germany to help medical professionals fight the spread of COVID-19. The first of three airlifts landed in Leipzig on 27 April 2020. The Antonov AN-225 carried 10 million masks and the remaining two flights will bring an additional 14,900,000 masks. The AN-225 is the largest plane in the world, and is made available to the nine NATO Allies participating in the SALIS programme, which is managed by the NATO Support and Procurement Agency.
