Hapag-Lloyd Flug (between 2005 and 2007 also marketed as Hapagfly) was an airline based in Langenhagen, Lower Saxony, Germany. It operated scheduled and charter passenger flights, mainly to holiday resorts in Europe. In January 2007 in a restructuring, it combined its operations with Hapag-Lloyd Express to become TUIfly] for which it operated all flights, while Hapag-Lloyd Express marketed them until TUIfly got its own license.
The original HAPAG company first became involved in the aviation industry in 1910, sponsoring Zeppelin flights.
Hapag-Lloyd Flug was established in July 1972, when the Hapag-Lloyd shipping group bought a few Boeing 727s to fly its cruise passengers from Germany to the ports of call for the cruises. It began operations on 30 March 1973. Through the years, the airline added regular passenger flights to its schedule, as well as new airplanes, such as the Boeing 737-800 and Airbus A310 aircraft. Since 1997, it has been a subsidiary of TUI AG, which also includes the Hapag-Lloyd cargo container line and cruise line.
In November 2005, the airline changed its name to Hapagfly due to the new marketing strategy of the TUI Group. In January 2007, it was merged into the new cooperation TUIfly with Hapag-Lloyd Express. Hapagfly operated services mainly to European holiday resorts. Most of them are now operated by TUIfly.
During its existence, Hapag Lloyd Flug operated more than 80 aircraft of the following types: BAC 1-11-500, Boeing 727-100, Boeing 727-200, Boeing 737-200, Boeing 737-400, Boeing 737-500, Boeing 737-800, Airbus A300-B4, Airbus A310-200 and Airbus A310-300.
The Airbus A310 is a medium- to long-range twin-engined wide-body jet airliner that was developed and manufactured by Airbus. Released in 1983, it was the second aircraft to enter production by Airbus Industrie, the consortium of European aerospace companies now a subsidiary of Airbus Group. The A310 is a derivative of the Airbus A300, the first twin-engined widebody airliner. Initially, two versions of the A310 were planned, the regional A310-100 and the transcontinental A310-200. The A310-100 had a range of 2,000 nmi (3,700 km) with 200 passengers, whilst the -200 had a higher MTOW and centre section fuel, and could carry the same load a further 1,000 nmi (1,900 km). Sales of the A310 continued and by the time the prototype A310-200 aircraft made its first flight on 3 April 1982, orders and options for 181 aircraft had been placed by 15 airlines worldwide, a somewhat better start than that of the original A300. It was clear that the longer-range series −200 aircraft was the more popular aircraft and Airbus decided in 1979 to stop offering the low gross weight series A310-100 (originally proposed for Lufthansa), none of which were built. The first A310, the 162nd Airbus off the production line, made its maiden flight on 3 April 1982 powered by the earlier Pratt & Whitney JT9D-7R4D1 engines. The −200 entered service with Swissair and Lufthansa a year later. Also the late series −200 also featured wing fences identical to those of the −300.
